Plain English

CCTV and security lighting, what we install

Two products, often combined in the same install. CCTV (closed circuit television, basically your own private camera network) gives you recorded footage of who came near or onto the property. Security lighting (PIR motion activated floods) deters intruders before they get close, and gives the cameras a properly lit subject when they trigger.

We install three tiers of CCTV. Premium professional (Hikvision, Dahua): wired PoE cameras, local NVR, no subscription, best image quality, what serious property owners and commercial premises run. Mid-tier (Reolink): same wired PoE approach, lower price point, slightly less reliable but acceptable for most domestic uses. Consumer wireless (Ring, Nest, Arlo, Eufy): app-led, cloud storage subscription, easiest to set up, quality varies.

Most Fraserburgh customers come in thinking they want consumer wireless and leave with a Hikvision or Dahua wired NVR system. Once they understand the cloud subscription cost over 3 to 5 years (£3 to £15 a month per camera), the local NVR pays back fast. We don't push, we explain both, you choose.

5 main camera types

Pick the right type per location

Most properties end up with a mix. Bullets covering driveways and gardens, a dome at the front of the house, a doorbell at the entrance, maybe a PTZ on a larger plot. We design the layout in the survey.

  • Bullet cameras

    £120 to £220 per camera

Long, cylindrical body. Most common outdoor camera type. Easy to aim, good night IR range (typically 30 to 50m), visible deterrent (people see them and behave). Hikvision and Dahua make the best bullet cams for serious property protection.

Best for: Driveways, garden boundaries, commercial perimeters

  • Dome cameras

    £140 to £240 per camera

Hemispherical dome housing. Less obviously a camera (people don't always notice them), harder to tell where they're pointed. Good for indoor commercial spaces and discreet outdoor mounting on house facades.

Best for: Front of house, retail interiors, holiday let entrances

  • PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom)

    £380 to £680 per camera

Camera moves remotely or follows motion automatically. Single PTZ can replace 3 to 4 fixed cameras on a large property. Better for large gardens, harbour business yards, commercial car parks. Pricier per unit but more coverage per fitting.

Best for: Large gardens, business yards, perimeter coverage

  • Floodlight + camera combo

    £220 to £380 fitted

Single fitting combines high output PIR floodlight with a built in camera. Camera triggers recording when PIR triggers light. Common entry point for first time CCTV buyers (Ring Floodlight Cam, Eufy Floodlight, Hikvision combo). Good as supplementary not primary security.

Best for: Driveway entrance, side gate, single zone coverage

  • Smart doorbell

    £180 to £320 fitted

Replaces existing doorbell. Camera, microphone, two way audio, motion detection. Ring is dominant. Eufy is the privacy focused alternative (local storage, no subscription). We do the wiring and the app setup, integrates with existing chime or works wireless via your wifi.

Best for: Front door visitor monitoring, parcel delivery security

Pair with PIR security lighting

Why floodlights and CCTV work better together

CCTV cameras can record in the dark using infrared (IR), but the image quality is far better with a triggered PIR floodlight illuminating the subject. Plus the light itself acts as a deterrent: most opportunist intruders leave the moment a bright light triggers, before the camera even matters.

We typically pair every outdoor camera with a PIR floodlight in the same zone. Modern combined fittings (Ring Floodlight Cam, Eufy Floodlight Cam) bundle both in one unit, but we usually recommend separate fittings for serious installs: better image quality, easier to replace one without the other, and you can re-aim independently.

For Fraserburgh harbour-front properties, we use marine grade fixings and IP65 minimum on all PIR floods. Combined PIR + camera units run £220 to £380 fitted. Separate PIR floodlight + dedicated camera in the same zone runs £350 to £550 fitted.

The legal bit

GDPR, ICO registration, and what you need to know

Domestic CCTV is legal but regulated. The key rule: if any camera captures beyond your property boundary (the street, your neighbour's garden, a public footpath), you become a data controller under UK GDPR. You must register with the ICO (typically £40 to £60 annually for domestic).

We design installs to keep cameras within your boundary wherever possible. Bullet cameras with their narrower field of view, careful aiming, and privacy masking on the camera firmware all help stay within the property line. The survey diagram shows you what each camera will see, so you can review before we install.

For commercial installs, the rules tighten: GDPR signage required at every entrance, a privacy notice available to staff and visitors, retention period policy (typically 30 days max unless there's an active investigation), and a data subject access request process (anyone caught on camera can request a copy of their footage). We provide the signage and the privacy notice template as part of the install.

Holiday let CCTV is a particular Fraserburgh sensitivity. Cameras inside guest accommodation are illegal. Cameras in shared external areas (driveway, garden) are fine but must be disclosed in the booking confirmation. Many hosts now opt for doorbell cameras only as a compromise.

Local context

Why CCTV demand is high in Fraserburgh

Three Fraserburgh factors keep CCTV demand high. One, harbour businesses with significant fuel, equipment, or stock value need camera coverage for insurance compliance. Two, holiday let owners want remote eyes on a property between guest visits. Three, granite cottage owners on quieter streets value the deterrent effect because emergency response times outside the AB43 town centre run longer than urban Aberdeen.

Coastal exposure is the install consideration. Within 2 miles of the harbour we default to marine grade housings and IP67 ratings. Cable runs avoid prolonged salt spray exposure where routing options allow. This adds about 15% to install cost vs inland UK pricing but the camera lifespan difference is massive (8 to 10 years vs 2 to 3 with non marine kit).

Common questions

CCTV & Security Lighting FAQs for Fraserburgh

  • Do I need an NVR (Network Video Recorder) or is cloud storage enough?

Depends on the use. NVR (local hard drive in your house) gives you 30 to 90 days of footage stored locally, no monthly fee, no internet dependency. Cloud (Ring, Nest, Arlo, Eufy) gives you off-site storage if cameras are stolen but typically requires a £3 to £15 monthly subscription per camera. For serious property protection (4+ cameras, commercial), NVR wins on cost and reliability. For 1 to 2 cameras and you want zero install hassle, cloud might suit. We do both.

  • Are CCTV cameras legal in domestic Fraserburgh properties?

Yes, with two important caveats. First, GDPR applies if any camera captures beyond your boundary (the street, neighbour's garden, public footpath). You become a data controller and must register with the ICO if recording outside your property line. Second, signage is required for commercial properties (not domestic if cameras are entirely within your boundary). We design installs to keep cameras within your boundary by default to avoid the ICO registration burden.

  • Which CCTV brand should I pick?

Three tiers. Premium / professional: Hikvision and Dahua (best image quality, most reliable, NVR-based, £120 to £220 per camera). Mid-tier: Reolink (decent quality, PoE based, NVR-included kits, £100 to £180 per camera). Consumer / DIY-friendly: Ring, Nest, Arlo, Eufy (wireless, easier app, monthly cloud fee, £150 to £280 per camera). We recommend Hikvision or Dahua for serious property protection and Reolink for budget-conscious buyers.

  • How long does CCTV installation take?

Domestic 4 camera kit with NVR: 4 to 6 hours over a single day. Includes mounting, cable runs, NVR setup, app config, and customer handover. Commercial 8 camera install: 1 to 2 days depending on cable run complexity. Wireless cameras (Ring, Nest, Eufy) without NVR: 1 to 2 hours. Combined CCTV + PIR floodlight install can typically be done in the same visit.

  • Do I need to drill through walls for cable runs?

Some, yes, for wired CCTV. Each camera needs an Ethernet cable (PoE) or coaxial cable back to the NVR location. We try to route through lofts and existing cable runs first, with external surface conduit only where unavoidable. Wireless cameras avoid this entirely but add wifi dependency and battery management. For granite Fraserburgh cottages, wireless can be the better choice if there are too many awkward walls to chase.

  • Can my cameras integrate with smart home (Alexa, Google, HomeKit)?

Yes for most modern systems. Hikvision and Dahua integrate via the Hik-Connect / Dahua DMSS apps, plus voice control via Alexa Show or Google Hub for camera viewing. Ring and Nest integrate natively with Alexa and Google. Eufy supports Apple HomeKit Secure Video which is the privacy-strongest option (local processing, encrypted iCloud storage). We do the integration as part of the install.

  • How do you protect against camera tampering or theft?

Mounting at 2.5m+ height (above easy reach). Hikvision and Dahua bullet cameras have screw lock housings. NVR stored inside the house in a secure location (not a garage or shed). Cloud backup of critical footage runs in parallel for premium installs so even if someone steals the NVR the footage survives. We can also fit anti tamper alarms on commercial installs.

  • Do you handle the GDPR registration for me if I need it?

We can advise but you're the data controller, registration is your legal duty. If your install captures beyond your boundary, you need to register with the ICO (£40 to £60 a year for most domestic). We give you the survey diagram showing what each camera covers, so you have the evidence pack ready for ICO. For commercial installs, we provide the GDPR signage and the privacy notice template.
