Outdoor lighting in Fraserburgh, the practical version
Outdoor lighting splits into 5 fairly distinct categories that share the trade skills but vary widely in scope and cost. Most Fraserburgh customers come to us for one specific outcome (PIR floodlight after a break in scare, festoon lighting before hosting a barbecue, driveway lighting because the kids keep falling over the step) and end up doing more once they see the difference.
Coastal weather is the differentiator. Within 2 miles of the harbour, salt air degrades non-marine kit twice as fast as inland UK. We default to marine grade stainless steel fixings, IP65 minimum on every fitting, sealed cable glands, and we route cable to avoid prolonged saltwater spray exposure. The cost premium is modest (about 25%) but the lifespan difference is substantial (8 to 10 years vs 2 to 3 with non marine kit).
Every install is BS 7671 18th Edition certified. Outdoor circuits are RCD protected (mandatory under the regs since 2008). For low voltage installs we size the transformer with 25 to 30% headroom so future extensions don't trigger a return visit.
5 outdoor lighting categories
Pick the right type for your project
Driveway and path lighting
£450 to £950Bollards, in ground uplighters, soffit downlighters, or wall mounted coach lights. Mix of safety (lighting the path so visitors don't trip) and aesthetics (the house looks better at night). Usually photocell controlled (dusk to dawn) or PIR controlled (motion activated).
Typical: 4 to 8 fittings for typical Fraserburgh driveway
Garden feature lighting
£280 to £850Uplighters at the base of trees, deck lights set into decking, festoon string lighting, soffit washers under eaves. Designed to highlight features and create ambience rather than provide working light. Most use 12V or 24V low voltage with a transformer in a weatherproof enclosure.
Typical: 5 to 15 fittings or 10 to 30m of festoon
PIR security floodlights
£180 each, £450+ for clustersMotion activated high output floodlights, typically 20W to 50W LED equivalent of a 150W halogen. Triggered by passive infrared motion sensor. Mounted high (2.4m+) to avoid tampering and to give wide detection coverage. Best fitted on house corners or above the front door for maximum coverage.
Typical: 1 to 3 PIR floodlights per property
Patio and bistro lighting
£380 to £680Hanging string lights over a pergola, bistro festoon lights along a fence line, or recessed downlighters in the soffit above a deck. Strong demand in Fraserburgh harbour front and Sandhaven holiday lets where evening outdoor space is a marketing feature.
Typical: Bistro: 8 to 25m. Soffit: 4 to 8 fittings.
Smart outdoor (Hue Outdoor, Govee, smart PIR)
£450 to £1,200App and voice controlled outdoor lighting. Philips Hue Outdoor is the dominant ecosystem (Lily uplighters, Calla bollards, Lucca lanterns), all IP65 rated. Govee is the cheaper alternative for festoon and string lights. Smart PIR floods integrate with home alarm systems for arm-when-away notifications.
Typical: Hub + 4 to 6 outdoor fittings typical setup
IP ratings explained
Why IP rating matters more in Fraserburgh than inland UK
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The 2 digits after IP describe protection from solid objects (first digit) and water (second digit). For outdoor electrical work in Fraserburgh, second digit is the one that matters.
- IP44Splash from any direction. Adequate only for sheltered porches or deep eaves where rain doesn't directly reach. Not suitable for open Fraserburgh exposure.
- IP65Water jets from any direction. Standard rating for general outdoor use. Suitable for walls, soffits, garden fittings under shrub cover. Our default for Fraserburgh.
- IP67Temporary immersion in water (15 min, 1m depth). Suitable for ground level fittings, edge of driveway, around ponds or water features.
- IP68Continuous immersion. Required for submerged pond, pool, or water feature fittings.
For harbour front Fraserburgh properties (Sandhaven, Cairnbulg, Inverallochy, harbour adjacent), we go one rating higher than the technical minimum and use marine grade fixings. The 25% cost premium pays back in years 3 to 5 when non marine kit would have failed.

The voltage decision
230V mains vs 12V or 24V low voltage
High output, simpler install
230V mains
Standard cable, RCD protected circuit, professional install required. Used for PIR floodlights, wall mounted coach lights, bollards, garden festoon over 100W. More fitting choice, brighter outputs, simpler control wiring. Mandatory professional install (Part P notifiable in England, similar in Scotland).
- ✓High brightness available (PIR floods to 30W LED / 200W halogen equivalent)
- ✓Bigger fitting choice (most outdoor lighting market)
- ·Higher install cost (cable, conduit, RCD)
Safer near water + soil
12V or 24V low voltage
Transformer in a weatherproof enclosure converts 230V to 12V or 24V. Safer near water and in lawns where digging happens. Easier to extend or move fittings later. Used for garden uplighters, deck lights, pond lighting, small bollards.
- ✓Mandatory near pond, pool, or wet zones
- ✓Easier DIY extensions later
- ✓Lower running cost (mostly LED)
- ·Limited brightness, not for security floods

Smart outdoor
Philips Hue Outdoor, Govee, smart PIR
Smart outdoor lighting has matured massively in the last 3 years. Philips Hue Outdoor is the dominant ecosystem with proper IP65 fittings, integration with Alexa / Google / Apple HomeKit, and reliable performance through Aberdeenshire winters. Hue Outdoor uses the same Hue Bridge as indoor Hue, so if you've already got Hue inside, the outdoor side just adds to the network.
Common Fraserburgh smart outdoor setups: Hue Lily uplighters at the base of trees or wall corners (£250 starter kit, then £75 each additional). Hue Calla bollards lining a path (£180 each). Hue Lucca wall lanterns flanking the front door (£150 each). Smart PIR floodlights with motion notifications to your phone (£280 to £450 fitted, depending on integration depth).
Govee is the cheaper alternative, particularly for festoon and string lights. Less reliable than Hue (more frequent disconnects from wifi) but a third of the price. Better for ambient garden lighting where occasional outages aren't a problem.
Local realities
Why outdoor lighting in Fraserburgh needs a coastal grade approach
Coastal salt air corrodes outdoor electrical kit twice as fast as inland UK. Within 2 miles of the harbour, non marine grade fittings show visible degradation inside 2 to 3 years (rust streaks on stainless that wasn't really stainless, gasket failures, cable corrosion at gland entries). Marine grade lasts 8 to 10 years before maintenance needed. We default to marine grade for harbour front, Sandhaven, Cairnbulg, Inverallochy, and any property within 2 miles of the waterline.
The other Fraserburgh consideration is wind. Aberdeenshire coastal wind regularly hits 50 to 70mph in winter. We mount fittings with extra fixing points than the manufacturer minimum, especially on garden festoon runs which take the most wind load. We've seen poorly mounted festoon strings come down in single events, taking the bistro pergola lights with them. Worth doing right first time.
Common questions
Outdoor Lighting FAQs for Fraserburgh
What IP rating do outdoor lights need in Fraserburgh?
IP65 minimum for general outdoor use (protected against dust ingress and water jets from any direction). IP67 for fittings on the ground or near water (immersion tolerance). IP44 only for fittings in covered porches or under deep eaves where direct rain doesn't reach. We don't fit anything below IP65 outdoors in Fraserburgh because of coastal weather, even nominally sheltered fittings get exposed to driven rain off the harbour.
What's the difference between 230V mains and 12V or 24V low voltage outdoor lighting?
230V mains: most security floodlights, wall lights, and bollards run on 230V like indoor lighting. Standard cable, RCD protected circuit, professional install required. 12V or 24V low voltage: garden feature uplighters, deck lights, pond lights typically run from a transformer that converts 230V to safer low voltage. The transformer mounts in a weatherproof enclosure, the low voltage cable runs to the fittings. Safer to work near water, easier to extend later, slightly more limited in fitting choice.
How much extra does coastal grade kit cost in Fraserburgh?
Roughly 20 to 30% premium for marine grade stainless steel hardware, sealed cable glands, IP67 fittings, and salt resistant gaskets. For a typical £450 driveway install on a property within 2 miles of the harbour, marine grade adds about £100. Worth it because non marine kit fails inside 2 to 3 years on harbour front properties (corroded fixings, water ingress through degraded seals). Marine grade typically lasts 8 to 10 years before maintenance needed.
Do I need a permit or planning permission for outdoor lighting?
Almost never for normal residential outdoor lighting, no. Listed buildings and conservation areas (some properties in the older parts of Fraserburgh fall into this) sometimes restrict fittings on the building facade. We check before installing on listed properties. Light pollution is regulated under the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982, but realistic domestic lighting almost always falls within permitted limits. We use downward facing beams as standard which keeps you compliant.
Can you install lighting around a pond or water feature?
Yes. Special considerations apply: 12V or 24V low voltage system mandatory (230V near water is too dangerous), all fittings IP68 rated for full immersion, RCD protection on the supply circuit, and installation away from people swimming or wading. Most Fraserburgh pond installs are 12V LED uplighters on the edge of the water plus 1 or 2 IP68 submerged fittings. From £280 typical for a small pond.
How long does a typical outdoor lighting install take?
PIR floodlight on existing socket cable: 1 to 2 hours. Driveway lighting cluster (4 fittings, new cable run): 4 to 6 hours over 1 day. Whole garden lighting design (15 fittings, transformer, controller): 1 to 2 days. Installs requiring trenching for cable in lawns or paths add half a day. We do trenching by hand to keep the disruption manageable.
Will you fit smart outdoor lighting like Philips Hue Outdoor?
Yes. Philips Hue Outdoor is the most reliable smart outdoor system, all fittings IP65 rated, all controllable from the Hue app and Alexa / Google / Apple HomeKit. Common Fraserburgh setups: Hue Lily uplighters at the base of a tree (£250), Hue Calla bollards along a path (£180 each), Hue Lucca wall lanterns by the front door (£150 each). Plus Hue Bridge if not already installed (£35). We do the install plus the app setup and scene configuration.
Can I extend an outdoor lighting circuit later?
Depends on the original install. If we ran a low voltage transformer with extra capacity, yes, you can add fittings up to the transformer rating. If it's a 230V mains circuit, depends on the spare capacity on the RCD and the existing cable rating. We always plan with future extension in mind, oversized transformer, slightly larger cable than strictly required, junction boxes that allow tap-offs. Saves a return visit cost when you decide to add more.
